Jordan tells Iraq it will strike Iran-backed militias if attacked from its territory

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — AMMAN/BAGHDAD — Jordan has informed Iraq that it would target Iran-backed militias inside Iraqi territory if attacks against Jordan are launched from their positions, Saudi Arabia's Al Arabiya television reported, citing an unnamed Jordanian official. According to the report, Amman also shared intelligence with Baghdad on alleged plans by the militias to strike Jordanian soil and expects Iraqi authorities to take measures to stop them. The communication came after Saudi Arabia, with U.S. support, carried out airstrikes against several locations inside Iraq. Riyadh said the operations were a response to attacks on Saudi territory attributed to Iraqi groups. Iraq's government has announced an investigation into the strikes. Jordan has previously said it was targeted in drone attacks launched from the east, a direction consistent with Iraqi territory. No immediate Iraqi response to the reported Jordanian message was available.
