Israeli army says it killed Hamas commander who led October 7 attack on Gaza City

The Israeli military said it has killed Adhem Ibrahim Shaaban Nisaman, identified as the head of Hamas's Gaza City Brigade operations unit, who commanded the October 7 attack from the brigade. According to the army, the October 7 assault killed approximately 1,200 Israelis and saw more than 240 people taken hostage. It said Nisaman played a decisive role in the hostage file and was involved in the capture of Romi Gonen, Emily Damari, Ziv and Gali Berman, Eitan Mor, Matan Angrest, and Omri Miran. The military said Nisaman had taken command of one of Hamas's elite battalions in recent years and previously served as the Gaza City Brigade intelligence officer and commander of the Coastal Battalion. It added that he directly directed numerous attack plans against Israeli forces and the country, had recently overseen the retraining of the Gaza City Brigade and continued the production of weapons, and had worked to rebuild Hamas's military capabilities in violation of a ceasefire agreement. The Israeli army said its forces in the south have been acting in accordance with the agreements reached, but that operations to eliminate any threat to Israeli security would continue.
