Iraq’s Military Intelligence chief bars members from media appearances

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The head of Iraq’s Military Intelligence Directorate, Lt. Gen. Hassan al-Sallawi, has announced that existing directives prohibit members of the military institution from appearing in the media. In a statement issued Friday, al-Sallawi said the directives are enforced within the framework of legal instructions and that media visibility by personnel causes harm to the institution’s reputation. He added that official channels have been established for submitting complaints and requests, and that any member who feels they have been treated unfairly may file a grievance through the proper authorities and hierarchy. Al-Sallawi also said commanders, supervisors and intelligence officers hold regular meetings to monitor needs and resolve issues within the legal framework. According to the statement, directives issued by the Chief of the General Staff require ongoing meetings among commanders, supervisors, directors, intelligence and media officers and personnel.
