Iraqi PM approves promotions for two policemen killed in Baghdad operation

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ali Zeydi issued two administrative decrees on Tuesday promoting two security personnel killed last month during an operation in southern Baghdad's Dora area. Under the decrees, Brigadier General Hisham Mohammed Talla was elevated in rank and officer Khalid Abbas Lifta was promoted to lieutenant. The Security Media Cell said the promotions were granted in recognition of the officers' sacrifice while carrying out law enforcement and security duties. According to the statement, on the 28th of last month, a security unit came under armed attack during an operation to remove residential violations around the Dora, Karara and Dijla neighborhoods on Baghdad's Karkh side. Talla, who headed the Karkh police directorate, and Lifta were killed, while four others were injured, including a Baghdad municipality employee. The day after the attack, Security Media Cell spokesperson Brigadier General Saad Maan said the prime suspect had been detained in Baghdad's Rusafa side. No further details on the case were immediately available.
