Iraqi parliament postpones review of lawmaker membership challenges

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The Iraqi parliament postponed on Thursday the review of challenges to the validity of certain lawmakers' memberships after the session failed to reach the two-thirds quorum required for a legal sitting, the parliament's media office said. The session was chaired by Speaker Habib al-Halbusi and opened the 10th sitting of the second legislative term of the first legislative year of the sixth electoral cycle, scheduled for August 13, 2026. During the same session, lawmakers completed the first reading of a draft law approving an air transport agreement between the Iraqi government and the Austrian federal government. Parliament also passed the first reading of a fourth amendment to the law on the authentication of signatures on documents issued abroad and domestically. No date was immediately given for the resumption of the membership challenges review.
