BAGHDAD, Iraq — An Iraqi academic and economics expert announced the completion of a comprehensive legal file documenting damages stemming from the 2003 war and its aftermath, with initial assessments suggesting potential compensation claims could reach approximately $5 trillion. Naser El Kenani said the file contains thousands of documents, international reports, photographs and records illustrating losses of life, property, institutions and economic damage caused by the war, occupation and subsequent effects. He noted that discussions have been held with law firms in the United States, Britain and other countries, with some legal circles similarly estimating potential claims at around $5 trillion. The compensation claims cover damages not only to state institutions but also to the private sector, Arab and foreign companies, and humanitarian losses experienced by millions of Iraqi citizens. Kenani called on the government to rejoin the International Criminal Court as part of the effort to pursue reparations.
