Iraqi anti-corruption body detains Tikrit land registry official

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Commission of Integrity has detained Afraah al-Shimari, an assistant director at the land registry office in Tikrit, on corruption charges, a source at the agency said. Anti-corruption teams carried out the arrest under designated corruption files opened against her, according to the source. The commission said legal and investigative proceedings against al-Shimari are ongoing and that further action will be taken based on findings in later stages of the inquiry. It added that inspections at the Tikrit land registry office continue and that the case will be followed through to completion in a transparent manner. Local sources in Tikrit confirmed the detention and said the investigation is proceeding. Iraqi authorities have reiterated that operations targeting corruption will continue.
