Iraqi anti-corruption body arrests police director in Mosul bribery sting

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Federal Commission of Integrity said a police directorate chief in Mosul was caught red-handed soliciting a bribe, in an operation carried out with local police and counterterrorism units. According to the commission, the officer demanded payment to alter a detainee's testimony so that the case would fall within the scope of a general amnesty law. The officer also sat on the investigation panel reviewing the suspect's file and sought to shift the date of the alleged offense to make the defendant eligible for the amnesty. The operation was conducted by the Mosul Anti-Corruption Investigation Directorate in coordination with the Mosul Intelligence and Counterterrorism Directorate and the Mosul Police Command. An intermediary carrying $15,000 intended for the officer was also apprehended at the scene. Both suspects were referred to the competent investigating judge, who ordered their detention under decision No. 160/1983.
