Iraqi and Canadian Foreign Ministers Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand held a telephone conversation to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest. According to a statement from the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, Minister Anand reaffirmed Canada's commitment to advancing ties with Iraq and broadening joint cooperation. Minister Hussein expressed his desire to further develop cooperation and welcomed Canada's appointment of a new ambassador to Iraq. During the call, Anand reiterated the Canadian government's support for Iraq's policy of ensuring that weapons remain exclusively under state control, stating that Canada's support for the country would continue. Minister Hussein expressed appreciation for the support Ottawa has provided to Iraq over various periods. Minister Anand also noted Canada's pleasure in hosting the Iraqi national football team to strengthen friendly bonds. Minister Hussein concluded the call by extending an official invitation to Minister Anand to visit Iraq.
