Iraq water minister reviews river pollution files with parliamentary committee

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Minister of Water Resources Muthana al-Tamimi attended a meeting of parliamentary committee No. 63 on June 21, 2026, to review the file on river pollution in Baghdad, Wasit, Basra and Diyala, the ministry said. The session was also attended by the Minister of Environment, members of parliament and representatives of relevant bodies, according to the statement. Discussions focused on identifying pollution sources and protecting river water quality, with particular attention to untreated wastewater discharges flowing into rivers south of Baghdad and in Wasit and Basra. Participants stressed the need to treat the discharges and remove their effects from waterways. The committee also examined measures to address the causes of pollution in the Diyala River and improve water quality. Coordination among relevant institutions to safeguard water resources and protect public and environmental health was also on the agenda.
