Iraq National Team Travels to Spain for 2026 World Cup Preparations

Iraq’s national team left Baghdad for Girona, Spain, as it steps up preparations for the 2026 World Cup. The move marks another phase in Iraq’s push toward a first World Cup appearance since 1986, underscoring the significance of the campaign for the country’s football program. The squad includes players from the Iraqi league, while professional players based abroad are expected to join the camp upon arrival in Spain. Under Australian coach Graham Arnold, the team will begin a training camp in Girona. Iraq is scheduled to face Andorra on 29 May in La Coruña, before playing Spain on 4 June. The two matches are part of the team’s build-up to the tournament. Prime Minister Ali Zidi supported the national team by sending it to Spain on a private jet. The gesture added official backing to Iraq’s preparations ahead of the qualifying campaign and major international fixtures.
