The move comes after preparations for elections planned for September 2025 were halted by Asian and international football bodies following complaints. Adnan Dargahli was elected federation president in the most recent vote in 2021. Since then, the federation has moved to reset its electoral timeline as part of a new roadmap. In January 2026, the Iraq Football Federation unanimously adopted that roadmap. The decision established the new election date and formally shifted the process to May 23, 2026.
