NEW YORK, United States โ The United Nations General Assembly elected Iraq as a vice president for its 81st session at its headquarters in New York. In the same meeting, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Halilur Rahman was elected president of the General Assembly for the 2026-2027 term.
Rahman won 99 of 190 votes, while the candidate of the Greek Cypriot administration, Andreas S. Kakouris, received 91. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said the outcome reflected Iraqโs standing in the United Nations and the wider international community.
The ministry said the post was also important for supporting the Sustainable Development Goals and for improving the work of the General Assembly. It said the result was the product of Iraqโs balanced foreign policy and diplomatic efforts.
Iraq is expected in the new role to contribute to strengthening multilateral cooperation and international dialogue, according to the ministry.
