Iran's foreign minister warns against seizing frozen assets

WASHINGTON, United States — LONDON — Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that allowing one country to seize another's assets to pay unrelated future claims would set a dangerous precedent, saying no state's holdings would be safe if governments normalize such actions. Posting on X, Araghchi said the resulting chaos would be neither pleasant nor peaceful. His remarks came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump, who said Thursday that any future damages to ships, cargo or related parties would be covered by Iranian assets under U.S. control. Trump, writing on his social media platform Truth Social, argued that the damages could be "very large" and that drawing on Iranian assets held in Washington would be "fair and just."
