Chinese Long March 3B rocket struck by lightning after launch, completes mission

BEIJING — A Chinese Long March 3B rocket was struck by lightning shortly after lifting off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the country's southwest, but completed its mission without disruption, Chinese media reported. The rocket continued its ascent normally after the strike, according to the reports. The rocket carried the Tianlian-2-06 communications satellite, which was successfully placed into its planned orbit. Officials said the launch proceeded without deviation and the satellite reached its designated position as scheduled. The Long March 3B is one of China's primary launch vehicles used to deliver satellites into a range of orbits. No damage to the rocket or payload was reported in the immediate aftermath of the strike.
