BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Iraq's border crossings generated approximately 560 billion dinars in revenue in July, the head of the Iraqi Border Crossings Authority, Omar al-Waili, said. He added that total revenue for the first seven months of the year surpassed 2.5 trillion dinars.
Al-Waili said electronic automation has become a core element of modern border management in advanced countries, reducing reliance on human intervention and allowing real-time tracking of cargo movement. He described the system as central to the authority's modernization efforts.
The authority said enforcement operations during the first seven months included seizures of contraband cigarettes, the destruction of goods unfit for consumption, and the detection of irregularities linked to false declarations. Officials reported that prevented losses to public funds amounted to roughly 200 million dinars at the Turaybeh crossing, more than one million dinars at al-Waleed crossing, about 47 million dinars at the Zarbatiyah crossing, and around 2.4 million dinars at the Shalamcheh crossing.
The authority did not immediately provide comparative figures for the same period last year or detail additional next steps.
