Iran warns Gulf states of retaliation against energy infrastructure if US attacks

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran has warned Gulf countries that it would target energy infrastructure across the region in the event of a new US attack, Reuters reported, citing five sources. The warning was delivered through diplomatic channels on July 28, after US President Donald Trump threatened to strike Iran's power grid and infrastructure, the sources said. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks with his counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar, and also contacted the commander of Pakistan's army, according to the report. The sources said Araghchi asked Washington's Gulf allies to use their influence to dissuade Trump from launching further strikes. One diplomat told Reuters that Iran conveyed it would respond to any attack by striking US assets and energy facilities throughout the Gulf. In remarks to Fox News, Trump said the United States was holding productive talks with Tehran on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resolving the nuclear file, but reiterated that Iran would face an unprecedented attack if it did not cooperate. Trump added that Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, saying such an outcome would change the world.
