Iran reiterates commitment to friendly ties with neighbors, criticizes US role in Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran's Foreign Ministry said the country remains committed to maintaining friendly relations with its neighbors, while criticizing the United States for what it described as a destabilizing role in the Strait of Hormuz. The ministry said Iran would use all available means within the framework of legitimate self-defense against attacks by the United States and Israel. It argued that maritime blockades, unlawful threats and strikes on civilian infrastructure violate the United Nations Charter. Tehran also criticized the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General for what it called silence in the face of those attacks, saying the inaction conflicts with their legal responsibilities. The ministry accused the United States of using concerns over ship passage as cover for military pressure on Iran. Iran said it condemns US attacks and will continue defending its independence, national dignity and sovereignty, according to the statement.
