Google ends YouTube support on older Android versions

Google has begun phasing out technical support for its YouTube app on smartphones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and earlier operating systems. The company said the move is intended to encourage users to upgrade to newer versions of Android. Support for YouTube will continue on devices running Android 7.0 Nougat and later versions. Google warned that older operating systems can leave users exposed to security vulnerabilities and cyberattacks. Some users on affected devices have started receiving notifications directing them to access YouTube through a web browser instead of the app. Technology specialists have recommended that users whose app stops working switch to the browser, check for available updates, or move to a newer device. The company has not specified a timeline for the full phaseout or released a list of specific device models affected.
