France head coach Didier Deschamps said a FIFA World Cup group-stage match against Iraq was halted for an extended period because of heavy rain that left the pitch unplayable. Speaking after the game, Deschamps said the conditions gave him and Iraq coach Graham Arnold a chance to warm up, while the delay itself was unavoidable because of the risk from lightning and the weather.
France won the match 3-0, its first at this stage of the tournament. Kylian Mbappe scored twice and marked his 100th appearance for France, with his two goals separated by roughly three hours of stoppage time.
Deschamps said Mbappe, 27, is capable of breaking the all-time World Cup goalscoring record and described it as a matter of time. The coach added that during the long interruption he and his players passed the time by playing cards.
