JOHANNESBURG, South Africa โ Former world boxing champion Zolani Tete was killed in a shooting outside his home in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. Police and Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said two masked gunmen opened fire as the 38-year-old boxer was returning to his house in the town of Mdantsane.
A 27-year-old woman who was with Tete was also shot and taken to hospital, according to McKenzie. South African police have opened an investigation, and no suspect or motive has been identified.
McKenzie said he would not speculate on the identity of the attackers or their possible motive. "We will let the police do their job," he said, calling for anyone with information to come forward.
Tete won the International Boxing Federation junior-featherweight title in 2014 by stopping Japan's Teruo Kinoshita in Kobe, and later held the World Boxing Organization belt at the same weight. In 2017, he knocked out South Africa's Siphesihle Joni in 11 seconds in Belfast in one of the fastest finishes in a world title bout. Tete had been preparing to return to the ring, McKenzie said, without giving further details.
