Foreign Holdings of U.S. Treasury Bonds Top $9.3 Trillion

Foreign countries’ holdings of U.S. Treasury securities rose to $9.348 trillion at the end of March 2026, up from $9.001 trillion recorded in April 2025, according to U.S. Treasury Department data. The increase underscores the continued scale of international demand for U.S. government debt. Japan remained the largest holder with $1.191 trillion, followed by the United Kingdom with $926.9 billion and China with $652.3 billion. The Cayman Islands, Belgium and Canada were also among the largest holders. India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia each held more than $100 billion in U.S. Treasury assets. Iraq did not appear on the list of major holders because its stock remained below the $100 billion threshold.
