Flood wave from Euphrates expected to reach Iraq within days

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A flood wave moving down the Euphrates River, originating from Turkey and estimated at around 1,200 cubic meters per second, is expected to reach Iraq in the coming days after passing through Syrian dams, according to Syrian media. Authorities have warned residents of riverside settlements and those working along the banks to take precautions as water levels rise and currents strengthen. Agricultural land, infrastructure facilities and fishing activities along the river are likely to be affected as the wave passes, officials said. On the Syrian side, dam gates are set to be opened in a controlled manner, which is expected to increase the volume of water reaching Iraq. Iraqi authorities have begun preparations in Euphrates-side districts for possible flooding, according to the reports. Water levels in the area are expected to continue rising in the coming days.
