Iraqi lawmaker says arms restriction plan nearly finalized, mentions possible merger with Popular Mobilization

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A member of Iraq's Coordination Framework, Mahmoud al-Miyahi, said the issue of restricting weapons in the country is nearly settled, with options under consideration being either a law that removes weapons from circulation or a merger of certain armed factions into the Popular Mobilization Forces. Al-Miyahi said the decision will follow the withdrawal of foreign forces and the end of existing security threats. He noted that some groups view the proposed merger as potentially harmful to the Popular Mobilization Forces and its standing. According to al-Miyahi, resistance factions played a role in protecting the political structure during the Islamic State period, and their weapons were used in support of the government rather than against it. He stressed the need to distinguish between uncontrolled arms and weapons held by resistance groups. Al-Miyahi added that restricting weapons will be handled through negotiations rather than the use of force.
