Novak Djokovic says world No. 1 Jannik Sinner is the biggest obstacle to his bid for a 25th Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, where the two men are placed on opposite sides of the draw and could only meet in the final on 7 June. Djokovic is chasing a record 25th major crown that would give him the outright lead in men’s Grand Slam singles titles. The 39-year-old Serbian is seeking to extend his place in tennis history, while the 24-year-old Sinner enters the tournament as the form player after 29 straight wins and six consecutive Masters titles. Sinner also won three clay-court Masters events this season, becoming only the second male player in history, after Djokovic, to capture all 1000-level tournaments. Djokovic, who has reached at least the semi-finals in all five of the most recent Grand Slam tournaments, is viewed as the strongest candidate to stop Sinner’s rise in Paris. He said the Italian’s achievements at such a young age are impressive and congratulated him on his results. Carlos Alcaraz is absent from the tournament because of injury, removing one of Djokovic’s main rivals from the draw. That leaves Sinner as the leading contender on the opposite half of the bracket in what could shape the decisive match of the French Open.
