Diyala Chamber Chief Proposes Six-Point Plan to Revive Iraq's Economy

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The chairman of Diyala Chamber of Commerce called on the private sector to take a more active role in the country's economic development, warning that Iraq is navigating a difficult financial period following significant disruptions to oil exports. Mohammed al-Timimi presented a six-point roadmap on June 8, 2026, centered on reviving industrial sectors that have remained stagnant since 2003. His proposals include launching transparent investment programs through a single-window system, establishing legal protections for investors, and shielding domestic producers from cheap imports. Al-Timimi said these measures could generate tens of thousands of new jobs and reduce unemployment and poverty rates. With Iraq's population exceeding 45 million, rising joblessness risks deepening social and economic crises, he warned. The chamber chairman described the private sector as one of the most important tools for sustainable development and stability, adding that no further details on implementation were immediately available.
