BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Sales of artificial flowers and trees have risen noticeably in Baghdad's markets, with vendors reporting growing demand for the products in homes, restaurants and cafรฉs across the capital. Traders say the items are popular because they are cheaper than natural flowers, hold their color over time and require less upkeep.
The artificial arrangements are being purchased for everyday home decoration as well as for use in restaurants and cafรฉs, where owners say they want to bring spring-like color to their interiors year-round. Buyers also turn to the products for religious occasions, including the Islamic month of Muharram, and other events.
Merchants cite durability, the variety of shapes available and the lower cost compared with real plants as the main factors driving the increase in customers. They added that the products now occupy a larger share of shelf space in Baghdad's markets than in previous years.
