Death row inmate dies of kidney failure at Najaf prison, Iraqi police say

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A 60-year-old prisoner convicted on terrorism charges died at Al-Hut Prison in Najaf on Monday, a Dhi Qar police source said. The inmate, identified as a Salahaddin native, had been sentenced to death under Article 4 of Counterterrorism Law No. 13 of 2005. The source said the man died of kidney failure. No further details about the circumstances of his death were immediately available. Al-Hut Prison has previously drawn attention over reported deaths of inmates and recurring concerns about conditions inside the facility. The police source stressed that, contrary to past allegations, this death resulted from a medical condition rather than mistreatment.
