Chad cholera outbreak death toll rises to 13 with 239 cases reported

N'DJAMENA, Chad — Chad's Health Ministry said the death toll from a cholera outbreak in the country has risen to 13, with 239 cases recorded, according to an official ministry report. The case fatality rate stands at 5.4%, the ministry said. The outbreak is concentrated mainly in the northern Hadjer Lamis region and the capital N'Djamena, with 11 of the 13 deaths reported in the capital in August. The ministry said the first deaths were recorded on June 13, and the outbreak was officially declared on July 24. Health authorities have vaccinated approximately 50,800 people as part of efforts to contain the spread of the disease, the ministry added. Cholera cases and fatalities have also been reported in the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria, highlighting the broader continental spread of the outbreak.
