LA PAZ, Bolivia โ€” President Rodrigo Paz has declared a national emergency and authorized the military to clear road blockades and restore public order across Bolivia. The move follows 50 days of protests that have paralyzed the economy and disrupted supplies of food, fuel and medicine. Most of the demonstrations have been organized by groups aligned with former leftist president Evo Morales. Major roads, including routes in the capital La Paz, have been blocked, and intercity travel has largely come to a halt. The crisis began after Paz abruptly ended long-standing fuel subsidies, citing ongoing talks with the IMF and a shortage of foreign currency. Subsequent steps to fix fuel prices and roll back land regulations failed to calm the unrest, as unions broadened their demands to include wage increases, relief from fuel and dollar shortages, and Paz's resignation. Under the emergency decree, Paz must notify Congress within 24 hours. Lawmakers then have 72 hours to approve or reject the measure.
