Basra Provincial Council opens applications for district chief posts

BASRA, Iraq — The Basra Provincial Council has launched the application process for district chief positions across the governorate, with submissions to be accepted from June 21 to July 5, 2026, the council's media center said. The decision follows Administrative Order No. 6299, issued on June 11, 2026, and comes after several district chief dossiers were postponed because the status of some administrative units had been upgraded and certain incumbents had been placed under the retirement law. The media center said reopening the process is intended to broaden the pool of qualified candidates competing for the posts. Applications will be accepted only by the council's legal unit, and candidates who previously applied will remain on the candidate list, according to the statement. Applicants must be at least 30 years old, hold a bachelor's degree or higher, and have no service in the armed forces or security agencies, the statement said. They also must not fall under the Baath Party de-Baathification law, must have at least 10 years of work experience, and must be subject to the retirement law in force.
