Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani told the United Nations that maritime navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz is a shared responsibility, underscoring the waterway’s importance for global trade and the supply of energy, food and medicine. He said lasting peace in the region requires addressing Iran’s nuclear program, missile capabilities and support for armed militias. Al-Zayani argued that the peoples of the region should be given the opportunity to live in peace, develop and coexist. The minister said the security of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz is fundamental to the orderly flow of global commerce. He also referred to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Security Council resolutions and the International Maritime Organization. Al-Zayani’s remarks placed maritime security at the center of wider regional concerns, linking it directly to energy supplies and the stability of international shipping routes.
