BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” A Baghdad court has ordered former parliamentarian Jamal Nasir Deli Karbouli to pay $4.5 million in compensation for financial violations committed while serving as head of the Iraqi Red Crescent. The court found Karbouli responsible for using donations, made by Saudi individuals for establishing a Saudi hospital in Baghdad, for personal gain while serving as the organization's vice president. The ruling was based on a prior conviction by the Central Criminal Court for Corruption Cases, which was upheld by the Iraqi Federal Court of Cassation. Karbouli was sentenced to one year in prison under Article 453 of the Iraqi Penal Code. The court also ordered him to pay case costs and the Red Crescent's lawyer fees. The Red Crescent said the ruling was part of judicial processes protecting the rights of the state and humanitarian institutions.
