BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Iraq's Anti-Corruption Commission has requested parliamentary action against former Wasit Governor Mohammed Jamil al-Miyahi, who currently serves as a member of parliament, over a fire that killed and injured dozens at a Hyper Market in Kut city in July. The commission's Wasit Investigation Department submitted the formal request to parliament and relevant judicial authorities. Iraq's Anti-Corruption Court also filed a separate petition with parliament and its speaker calling for proceedings to be initiated. The fire broke out on July 26, 2025, in Kut, the capital of Wasit province. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani approved the investigation committee's findings on September 21 and ordered the former governor and several local officials referred to judicial authorities. Relatives of the victims have separately applied to the election commission requesting that some officials be removed from the electoral race.
