Anbar's Rutba district draws investor interest over water, energy and tourism assets

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Rutba district in western Anbar province holds a combination of natural and economic features, including groundwater reserves, the Horan Dam and proximity to border crossings, that local officials say could support broader development. District Governor Imad Reshawi said Rutba's geography, large surface area and environmental diversity give the district significant economic and development characteristics. Reshawi outlined infrastructure assets in the area, including the Horan Dam, underground wells, a 400-megawatt power capacity, a high-capacity transmission line and an international road passing through the district. He also said raw materials such as silica, phosphate and iron ore, along with pigments used in solar panel glass production, are present around Kashat, Asiyat and Ardam. Economist Ahmed Karbuli said groundwater and the Horan Dam could, with modern irrigation techniques, support expanded agriculture and livestock production, while phosphate and iron could be processed locally to generate added value. Karbuli added that sustained infrastructure, stable services and clear administrative incentives remain necessary despite the area's high solar radiation and large tracts of land. Rutba also features historic caravan routes, natural diversity and desert-ecology tourism potential, according to the local accounts.
