Seven women and 12 children who spent years in Syria and were identified as linked to ISIS have returned to Australia, arriving in Melbourne and Sydney via Qatar after leaving the Roj camp last week under the control of Syrian Kurdish forces. The group are Australian citizens, and their return is likely to draw close scrutiny from law enforcement and security authorities.
Federal police said no member of the group has been charged so far. Officers searched personal belongings and are examining devices as part of the investigation.
Australian officials stressed that the group received no assistance from Canberra in making the journey back. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said anyone who may have committed a crime would face the full force of the law.
