Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said the death toll from two consecutive earthquakes has risen to 3,889. The quakes, separated by 39 seconds, were measured at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, with a focal depth below 25 kilometers, according to data cited by Reuters.
The disaster struck on June 24 and caused widespread destruction, particularly in coastal areas north of the capital, Caracas. Officials reported 16,740 people injured and 15,907 displaced, and said the fate of those still trapped under rubble remains unknown.
Authorities said many families are searching for missing relatives as search and rescue operations continue nationwide. A national day of mourning has been declared.
