Iranian sources say Mojtaba Khamenei, the country's Supreme Leader, has not fully recovered from injuries sustained in a strike, and that security services have sharply restricted his movements and public appearances.
Speaking to Reuters, the sources said Mojtaba did not attend the funeral of his father, the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, because of intensive security measures aimed at protecting him against a possible new U.S. attack. Iranian state media reported that the late Supreme Leader was buried at the country's holiest shrine, with the ceremony held against the backdrop of rising tensions with the United States during a four-month war.
The sources said Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded in an airstrike on Feb. 28, the same attack in which his father was killed. He was chosen as Supreme Leader on March 8 and has since withdrawn from public life. Reports on his health and his ability to assume control of the country continue to be contradictory.
