US Rejects Iran Team’s World Cup Accommodations, FIFA Seeks Alternative Base

The United States has refused to allow Iran’s national team to stay inside the country during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, forcing FIFA to seek an alternative base for the tournament. Reports in the international press said the team will be housed in Tijuana, Mexico, while traveling by plane to the United States on match days. Iran Football Federation President Mehdi Taj said the team’s official camp has been moved from Arizona to Tijuana. The arrangement would place Iran’s training and accommodation outside the United States, even though its matches will be played there. Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said her country is ready to host Iran’s national team and will provide the necessary facilitation. FIFA has not changed the match schedule, according to the reports. Washington has not issued an official explanation for its decision. The move adds an administrative complication to Iran’s World Cup preparations and leaves FIFA managing a cross-border logistical solution for the team’s stay.
