The United Nations Support Mission in Libya warned on [date not provided] that the security situation in Zawiya has deteriorated sharply, raising the risk of a new wave of violence in the city and its surrounding areas. The mission said the deployment of armed groups and a rise in assassinations are deepening instability in a city that remains strategically sensitive.
In its statement, the mission said competition among armed groups for influence and control, especially through access to state resources, is weakening security and eroding institutions. It said this dynamic is also feeding impunity and making the countryโs peace and stability process more difficult.
The UN called on all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and human rights law. It also urged the protection of civilians and said residential areas must not be used for military purposes.
The mission further demanded rapid, independent and transparent investigations into cases of murder, assassination and threats. It said those responsible must be brought before justice.
