BAGHDAD, Iraq โ The UN Security Council on Saturday demanded that Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) immediately halt their assault on El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state. Council members expressed deep concern over reports of large RSF military reinforcements around the city and the danger that a ground offensive could trigger mass civilian casualties.
The council warned that escalating violence in the Kordofan region would worsen an already dire humanitarian situation, and called on all parties to stop the fighting, protect civilians and comply with their obligations under international law. The statement also noted an increase in airstrikes carried out by RSF drones.
Members stressed that all violations must be investigated and that those responsible must be held to account. They further called for the safe delivery of humanitarian aid and for civilians to be allowed secure passage out of the area.
