Ukraine struck a Russian oil tanker with a drone in the Kerch Strait, the waterway linking the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea, Rostov Region Governor Yuri Slyusar said Sunday in a statement on Telegram. The fire that broke out after the attack was extinguished, Slyusar said, adding that the tanker was empty and posed no risk of an oil spill. No injuries were reported.
In recent weeks, Kyiv has launched more than 40 attacks on Russian tankers in the Sea of Azov. Ukrainian authorities have said the operations are intended to disrupt fuel supplies to the Russian military and to isolate the Crimean Peninsula, which is under Moscow's control.
Russian authorities have not yet issued a collective statement on the attacks. Investigators continue to examine debris from the strikes in the area.
