TEHRAN, Iran โ Trump said Sunday the United States is close to reaching an agreement with Iran, with the destruction of highly enriched uranium and the prevention of Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons serving as key conditions.
In an interview with NBC News, Trump said if a deal is reached, the United States would work with Iran to reclaim and destroy uranium stocks. Without a deal, the United States will not allow Iran to have nuclear weapons, he said.
Trump described Iran's new leadership as more "reasonable" and said he is prepared to speak directly with the new Iranian leader. US forces will remain in the region for now, which he said is necessary for both stability and the negotiation process.
Trump also said frozen Iranian assets would not be released immediately, adding that the matter would be considered at a later stage.
