Trump signs orders imposing 50% additional tariff on Canadian goods

WASHINGTON, United States — WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has signed three executive orders imposing an additional 50% tariff on roughly 300 categories of Canadian goods, citing Canada's restrictions on U.S. exports, the White House said. The new duties will apply to products including smartphones, radios and other communications equipment, cement, plastics, clothing, furniture, certain sporting goods, honey, live plants, paper and works of art, according to the announcement. Additional tariffs will also cover a range of alcoholic beverages and Canadian-origin dairy products. The measures apply to all listed goods, including Canadian products previously exempted under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement negotiated between the three North American partners. The United States excluded Canadian exports it considers strategically important — energy resources, potash fertilizers, fish products and certain critical minerals — from the new duties. The additional tariffs are scheduled to take effect on Aug. 19.
