WASHINGTON, United States — WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington could take 20% of oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz, describing the United States as a "guardian angel" of the waterway, in remarks aired by Fox News. Trump said the U.S. would impose transit fees if no agreement is reached with Iran, and warned Tehran that closing the strait would threaten the survival of the Iranian state.
On Gaza, Trump said Hamas is "not creating a big problem right now" and argued that Washington's focus should shift to a deal with Iran. He also said he wants Iran to stop Hezbollah from causing trouble in Lebanon immediately, warning that failure to do so would result in a harsh U.S. strike on Iran.
Separately, direct talks between a U.S. delegation led by Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf began in Switzerland, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar. Vance said negotiators are working on a "new deal" that would change the Middle East. Further details on the negotiations were not immediately available.
