WASHINGTON, United States — WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that new negotiations with Iran would begin later the same evening, announcing that an understanding had been reached on the Strait of Hormuz and expressing optimism about a deal on Iran's nuclear program. Trump said the United States was demanding the restoration of "free and complete" navigation through the strait and an end to Iran's nuclear program. Trump disclosed that the military operation his administration had prepared would have been "the largest attack since World War II" but was cancelled to give diplomacy a chance. He stressed that the military option remained on the table and that the United States was prepared to act if an agreement was not reached quickly. Trump had earlier said the planned U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran had been suspended at the request of Tehran and several Middle Eastern countries, and that a framework envisioning the "full, comprehensive and complete" reopening of the strait had been reached. Iran's Foreign Ministry said talks were focused only on a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, not its reopening under U.S. conditions. The war the United States and Israel launched against Iran on Feb. 28, 2026 had reignited after a first ceasefire agreement in June, with mutual strikes and renewed restrictions on shipping in the strait.
