ANKARA, Turkey โ U.S. President Donald Trump said NATO member countries agreed at a summit in Ankara to raise their defense spending target from 2% to 5% of gross domestic product. Speaking after the meeting, Trump said he held important talks with other leaders during the summit and described the gathering as very important.
The U.S. president said the United States would continue to be the largest financial and military contributor within the alliance, and stressed that defense equipment should be produced more quickly. His remarks framed the agreement as a commitment by allies to carry a greater share of NATO's defense burden.
Trump also addressed Iran, claiming that Tehran views the United States as its primary target and opened fire on ships after initially seeking a deal. He said a U.S. military operation against Iran had been successful, asserting that the Iranian military had been largely destroyed, 59 ships sunk, numerous aircraft and radar systems destroyed, and senior commanders neutralized.
