TikTok is testing a feature that allows users to make voice calls directly from the direct-messaging section of the app, the company said. Technology researcher Jonah Manzano disclosed the tool on X, sharing screenshots that show a notification labeled "TikTok Audio" and a new phone icon in the messaging interface.
The feature appears to function like a conventional voice call, with the requirement that both users be on each other's friend lists on the platform. A TikTok audio notification pops up when a call is received, according to the screenshots.
The trial follows a series of updates TikTok has rolled out to its messaging tools in recent months, including voice notes, photo and video sharing, group chats, interaction chains and broadcast channels. The company has also added an emoji-based hidden mini-game that works in both individual and group conversations.
The additions are part of TikTok's effort to increase the time users spend on the platform, according to the company. No further details on the rollout timeline were immediately available.
