Study suggests frequent AI chatbot use may reshape user communication habits

A theoretical paper published in the journal AI & Society argues that frequent interaction with AI chatbots and customer-service robots could gradually push users toward the communication patterns of those systems, a phenomenon the authors call "robotoid humanity." Birmingham University researcher İnci Toral-Manson said social robots mimic human speech, emotional cues and behavioral patterns in order to shape customer responses.
The study suggests that repeated exchanges could make user behavior more formulaic and less spontaneous, as people indirectly adapt to the operational logic of AI systems. Linnaeus University engineer Mühendis Cansen Öztürkcan described the process as two-way, noting that machine-learning technologies tailor robot behavior to user inputs and offer a more personalized experience.
The researchers also argue that the effect could extend beyond communication style to influence self-perception, since feedback received from others shapes self-image. They note that AI systems rely on statistical patterns while human reactions remain less predictable, raising the possibility that faster-response patterns will be reinforced over time.
The paper has not yet been tested experimentally, and its authors say long-term observational and field studies are needed to verify the findings.
