Death toll in Nepal floods rises to 939, officials say

KATHMANDU, Nepal — The death toll from flash floods and landslides that struck mountain valleys and rivers in Nepal on August 27 has risen to 939, according to Nepalese authorities. Officials said the number of people reported missing stood between 3,925 and 4,247, as rescue operations continued in the affected areas. The disaster, which was triggered by ice, rock, mud and debris-laden floods, also hit the Chinese side of the Nepal-China border, where 16 people were confirmed dead. Combined fatalities on both sides of the border have reached 955, officials said. The number of missing people in Nepal has been revised down to 3,925, while China reported 546 missing, bringing the total across the two countries to 4,471. Authorities said search and rescue teams remain active in the impacted regions.
